The Occupational Therapy Approach to Well-being

Occupational Therapy takes a holistic view of health and well-being.

Rather than focusing solely on symptoms or diagnoses, Occupational Therapy recognises that our health is influenced by the way we live our everyday lives. The activities we engage in, the roles we hold, the relationships we build and the environments we live in all contribute to our overall well-being (Wilcock & Hocking, 2015).

At the heart of Occupational Therapy is a simple belief: what we do every day shapes how we feel, how we see ourselves and how we experience life.

We Are Always Changing

None of us stay the same throughout our lives.

As we grow older, our priorities, interests and abilities naturally evolve. We experience changes in our health, relationships, careers, family responsibilities and personal goals. Significant life events — whether positive or challenging — can change how we spend our time and what matters most to us.

At the same time, the world around us is constantly changing. Economic pressures, advances in technology, social expectations, cultural influences and global events all shape our daily lives.

Occupational Therapy recognises that well-being is not about maintaining the same routine forever. Instead, it is about adapting to change while continuing to engage in activities that are meaningful and support our health.

Understanding What Matters to You

Because everyone is different, there is no single definition of a balanced or meaningful life.

An activity that feels rewarding and fulfilling for one person may hold little meaning for someone else. This is why Occupational Therapy places such importance on understanding the individual — their values, interests, beliefs, goals and life experiences.

When we understand why certain activities matter to us, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. We become more aware of what gives us energy, what creates stress, what supports our well-being and what helps us feel connected to our identity and purpose.

This self-awareness allows us to make choices that are more closely aligned with our personal values, rather than simply responding to the demands and expectations of everyday life.

Well-being Is More Than Physical Health

Occupational Therapy views health as more than the absence of illness.

Well-being is influenced by many interconnected factors, including our physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, sense of purpose, opportunities for achievement, leisure, rest and participation in meaningful daily activities.

When one area becomes neglected, it can affect other aspects of our lives. Equally, making small positive changes in one area can often have a beneficial impact on others.

This holistic perspective is one of the reasons Occupational Therapy focuses on everyday life — not just on treating problems, but on helping people live meaningful and satisfying lives.

How Daily Equilibrium Applies These Principles

Daily Equilibrium has been inspired by this occupational therapy approach to well-being.

The app encourages you to regularly reflect on how you spend your time and whether your daily activities reflect what is important to you.

Rather than judging your choices or suggesting there is one "correct" way to live, Daily Equilibrium helps you recognise patterns, identify areas that may have become neglected and make small, realistic adjustments that support your own goals and values.

Because well-being isn't about achieving perfect balance every day — it's about creating a life that feels meaningful, sustainable and true to who you are.
